2008 Club Photo - Date Change - Saturday, May 31th  8:45 am Submitted by Buzz , April 27, 2008.

Due to the many Cycling Events for the month of May we have moved the Club Photo date to May 31st. This does not change the Club Picnic date, just the Club Photo. This way more members can be involved in
the Club Photo Day. It will take place during the Saturday Ride. We will leave from our normal location and head towards Fashion Valley. Once we arrive at what we use as a entrance to the Fashion Valley
Parking lot, we will travel about one block further to a grassy knoll adjacent to the San Diego Union Tribune building. Those that don't plan to ride that day can still be in the photograph as there is plenty of parking and the grass is more suitable for the photograph. Timing will be approximately 8:45am as it is minutes away from the ride start. Hope to see you there !.

New Saturday Morning Ride Start: Submitted by Damon Poor , October 9th, 2007.

We want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that starting
this Saturday we will be changing the start time and location of the
club ride. The new start time will be 8:30 and the new start location
is The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in Mission Valley.

For those of you who are bargain shoe shoppers it is in the same
center as DSW shoes,Bookworms there is Borders and for those of us
who eat out Gordon Biersch and Kings Fish House. We pass this
location every Saturday on the ride and it is on Camino de la Reina
just past Mission Center Road. There are a few things we need to go
over on what needs to be done for this to be a successful long term
relationship
.

Please remember and keep in mind that The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf
are looking forward to our business so it is important that we give
our business to them and support them while we are utilizing their
facities.Plesae, also make sure that before the ride that we not clog
up the front of the store and move to the stated staging/parking area
we rode to last Saturday. In order to comply with the agreement with
the Shopping Center Managemet it is imperative that we ONLY PARK IN
THE DESIGNATED AREA.

If you are approached by anyone saying that we can't meet there
please be courteous in your reply and direct them to either Buzz
Burnett or Kevin Gilbert as they have been in contact with
Westfield's management and we have been given the ok and welcome to
be there. This will further fortify our relationship quickly.

\When we return from our ride and you if drove down take your bike to
your car if possible so we can cut down some on the number of bikes
at the coffee shop. If you rode down we will let you know where to
put your bike. Please do not place them in front of other shops or
block any doorways or walkways.

As always it is best to be courteous to the other customers and
conduct yourselves in a manner that sheds a positive light on the
club. We want to let everyone know that we are a positive group in
the community . As before, please pick up after ourselves before we
leave and try and help the employees of the coffee shop. This
includes when we use the restrooms. It may take a couple of weeks for
the employee's of the coffee shop to get adjusted with the volume of
business that we will be giving them so be patient with them and
thank them for having us.

If we follow these guidelines and use common sense we can call this
home for a long time all mutually benefit from an enjoyable central
location.

Ride Safe, Cyclo-Vets BOD .

Steve Skwarlo Rides LiveStrong

Submitted by Steve Skwarlo, , Apr 3, 2007.

March 28, 2007 I was accepted as part of Team LIVESTRONG. Our Team is 140 strong and will ride RAGBRAI XXXV in July. This my second year in support of the LIVESTRONG Challenge. I was part of the Orange County LIVESTRONG Challenge last year. This event is a Grassroots Fundraising event. It's a special event aside from the three main rides in Portland, Philadelphia and Austin. Lance Armstrong will join us on RAGBRAI. Learn more at

http://www.livestrong.org

http://www.myspace.com/lancearmstrongfoundation

http://www.ragbrai.org/

Team LIVESTRONG has a special personal connection. I rode support for the 2005 Tour of Hope (TOH). The story is on Race Reports October 10 and September 29, 2005. Team LIVESTRONG is lead by Chris Brewer who rode the 2003 Tour of Hope and works at LAF. Chris Millard, one of the 2005 TOH National Team riders assigned to me, is on Team LIVESTRONG. The connection with the TOH is a bonus, I can hardly wait to meet my friends in Iowa. We will be supporting the fight against cancer and riding our bikes. Taken together that's a dream come true!

Vic Monteleon Memorial Ride
January 27, 2007

Submitted by Kathleen Roth, , Jan 19, 2007.

As most of you know, our Saturday ride leader and chief story-teller, Vic Monteleon, passed away in November. As a way to honor our friend and fellow club member, the Saturday, January 27th ride has been designated as The Vic Monteleon Memorial Ride.

We will ride social pace from Village Coffee to Doyle Park. From Doyle Park, take your usual route and pace (for some of us, it's still a social pace) and we'll meet back at the coffee shop for socializing and treats.

Special guest for this ride will be Vic's identical TWIN brother, George, who we are expecting to join us from the east coast for this ride and to attend the Soiree. If you haven't met George, well, what can one say about a twin of Vic's?? I believe they have the same the story-telling gene!

I hope that you will join me on the first part of the ride to honor a member who so loved his Saturdays with us.

Keep the rubber side down, folks.

Submitted by Gordy Shields, , Jan 14, 2007.

The three panel display of Cyclo-Vets world, national and state champions will be on view at the Soiree.

Those who viewed it Trek store during Cyclo-Vet night expressed both praise and appreciation for the work done by Bonnie Gabriel and Gordy Shields in putting it together.

"I'd hoped more of our former and even some of our present members would respond with pictures and stories," said Gordy. "I plan to keep adding to the display and eventually feature the achievements of individuals who have brought fame to the club."

After the Soiree the display will be returned permanently to the Trek store in La Mesa."

Gordy into Huntsman WSG Hall of Fame

Submitted by Gordy Shields, , Oct 20, 2006.

On October 10, I was one of 9 athletes and the only cyclist to be chosen for the inaugural class of inductees into the Huntsman World Senior Games Hall of Fame--celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Games.

When you consider that there have been over 70,000 entrants in those years, to be chosen was a real honor.

There was an inductee banquet that Chuck Gilbert and I attended where I received a Memory Book and a beautiful Commemorative Crystal Set. Then my name was read off by the Governor of Utah at the opening ceremonies. My picture was also  placed on a wall at the Dixie Convention Center.

At the cyclists' awards dinner I was voted to receive the 2006 Dave Richardson Award for Exceptional Devotion to the Spirit of Cycling--a complete surprise!

Equally impressive is the fact that I was the second Cyclo-Vet to receive the award in six years, Chuck Gilbert being the first.

Doug Alford Dies

Submitted by Annika Alford, , Sep 24, 2006.

I'm not sure if any of you knew well my Father, C. Douglas Alford ("Doug"), but I know he was a very active member of Cyclo-Vets in the early-to-mid 90's (the time Arnie/Gary were Presidents).

I wanted to let you know that he passed away on Friday of pneumonia. He always looked back with great fondness on his cycling days, and especially on his participation in various Masters Nationals.

He ultimately stopped cycling after his third serious accident in 1997 & took up the sport of golf (perhaps a bit safer for him!).

If you know of any Cyclo-Vet friends whom might know & remember him, I would appreciate it if you could pass on this information.

I'm writing to inform you of his passing, but also because I'd like to try to identify the actual races he placed in during his competitive years with Cyclo-Vets. We have some ribbons & such, but I don't have the details on which races he participated in and how he placed. I'd like to highlight this information in his obituary, as he was so proud of those years. Is this information you might be able to help us find?

Dad's memorial service is being planned now and we'll pass on the details if this is of interest. I suspect his obituary will also be in the Union-Tribune with the same details sometime this coming week. Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

Kind regards, Annika Alford

PS -- Thought it would be fun to let you know that Dad passed on his love of cycling to me, and I now enjoy the sport up in the Bay Area.

News from The Front--CV member Rob Gaeta is serving in Iraq

Submitted by Rob Gaeta, ,  Nov 15, 2005.

Good evening everyone - After a long convoy today (yes, they are actually more fun than they look like on CNN) my address has changed but now is relatively permanent.

Here it is:

SGT Rob Gaeta

CHARLIE Company

228th Forward Support Battalion

2/28 Brigade Combat Team

APO AE 09381

I'm at a pretty big airfield facility we seized from the Iraqis. We went running today and saw a bunch of MiG-21's and MiG-29's lined up, half-buried in the desert - an attempt by the Iraqi Air Force to hide their planes from coalition forces.

We had a three traumas come into Charlie Med last med, all of them ISF (Iraqi Security Forces) who had gunshot wounds due to negligent discharge (i.e. they were trying to clear their weapons and shot each other by accident because they didn't pay attention to the safety procedures the Marines and soldiers taught them).

Two lived, one died. I'm on duty tonight so I need to run. Talk to everyone soon. I look forward to your emails.

Rob

Submitted by Rob Gaeta, ,  Nov 12, 2005.

Hi everyone - Here's my first official installment of the Al Anbar Files:

We got into Baghdad this morning from Kuwait. Didn't get all of my duffels of the pallet off the C-17 when the compound at Sather started taking small arms fire. I borrowed some ammo from an outgoing British trooper and joined an ad hoc patrol. We didn't find anyone.

I had to then take a 2 hour helo (CH-46) ride out to our FOB in Al Anbar province. This area is controlled/patrolled by 2 MEF assets, so I'll be working in a predominantly Marine environment for the next several months. We took more fire in the bird over Fallujah.

I just got into the LZ near our FOB (can't say exactly where) and I had a minute to check email and I wanted to let everyone know my address:

SGT Rob Gaeta

CHARLIE Company

2/28 FSB

2nd Brigade Combat Team

APO AE 09362-9997

I'm a little fried from about 12 hours of traveling today, so I'll send more later. I'm going to try to find the Call Center and make some calls. Keep in touch.
