1992/93 - Gary DeVoss
1992 and 1993 were wonderful years for Cyclo-Vets. We won the Master’s Club of the Year award in both years. Our membership continued to grow until I believe we passed the 325-member mark by the end of my presidency.
While cyclists were then and are known for their often-“interesting” personalities and tendency to do things the normal population would consider crazy (like ride all day two or three days a week instead of working, or riding from Furnace Creek to the top of Mt. Whitney in two days), ’92 and ’93 set the record for members who had all kinds of fun upsetting the apple cart. Not to mention any names, but we could have filled the newsletter with a large gossip column as several members kept the rest of us fascinated by affairs, bizarre happenenings, and other various twists and turns. One well-known member, much younger then, went to Tijuana with another opposite-sex member, traded in bikes for roller blades, and ended up breaking his leg in the process. It seemed like every month’s board meeting had a few juicy agenda items like this. It was a wild and crazy two years as president.
For me, my proudest achievement was to cement the atmosphere of inclusion of all prospects into our club — no cliquish, elitist policies for Cyclo-Vets!!! After all, we got most of our National Champions from people just like you, who had maybe never even ridden with a group when they joined Cyclo-Vets.
