Gordy Shields - Cyclo-Vet, Cyclist Extraoridinaire

image

It is with great sadness, ….. Gordy Shields passed away June 30, 2013 at 2:55PM due to complications from open heart surgery after 95 years of life.

His surgery went well according to doctors, but other organs seemed to fail.

He was an unsurpassed as an asset to the San Diego Cyclo-Vets, an icon of Masters Cycling and certainly won the hearts of all of those he met.

Thanks to Gordy we have many amenities such as particular bike paths, bridges, newly installed sharrows, repaved areas in San Diego County due to his relentless pursuit of safe and enjoyable cycling in San Diego thru the San Diego Bicycle Coalition. His love of the Senior Games made it possible for many to continue racing as he did until the last few months.

Should there be a service or memorial it will be posted as available

Challenged Athlete Foundation and Our San Diego Cyclo-Vets

CAF Supports Past President of Cyclo-Vets, Don Peters

2002 and 2003 Past President, Don Peters suffered an illness that required he retire from riding two wheel bikes. Don was an accomplished cyclist with many national comptetitive events including completing and finishing in the top ten teams of the Race Across America in 2007 as well as many local Southern California Road Races and Criteriums.

With the assistance of the Challenged Athlete Foundation, he is again on the road to serious competition having received assistance on equipment and training on his new racing machine !

Many Cyclo-Vets have assisted this foundation with their inclusion in the Million Dollar Challenge and interpersonal development with the foundation. Again in 2011 there are club members and sponsors who are working and riding the Million Dollar Challenge event to make sure athletes like Don can remain competitive and once again enjoy the competition and lifestyle that was once so enjoyable.

Dodge Million Dollar Challenge (MDC)  is an unforgettable seven-day, 620-mile journey down the breathtaking California coastline from San Francisco to San Diego.  It is fully underwritten by outside sources insuring the cycling fundraisers that their donations are utilized for the needs of the athletes.

Entry is limited to 100 cyclists who each raise funds for CAF and in return enjoy a fully supported ride including van support, mechanics and route guides. Also included are hotel accommodations for seven nights, daily breakfast, lunch and dinner, massage, cycling apparel and more. The stops along the route include Santa Cruz, Big Sur, Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica and Dana Point... some of California’s most picturesque towns!

CAF is a unique organization that enables physically challenged athletes to find success in sports — and in life. The Million Dollar Challenge has earned a reputation as one of the premier cycling events in the country where individuals can use their passion for cycling to make a difference in the lives of others. MDC riders not only change gears, but change lives along the roads of California, and around the world.
