Cyclo-Vets in Italy - Courtesy of

Not long after that we pulled up behind a couple more guys – looking strangely familiar. A quick ‘ciao’ turned into a “hey I know you”…

Darrell Oge and I met at my week with Cycling Camps San Diego back in February. He’s been riding his bike around Italy the past few weeks and met up with his Italian friend Vincenzo for a few days at the Giro. But the story gets better, since I originally did not recognize Darrell, but I recognized his kit because I’d seen a story about them both in this morning’s local paper here in Bergamo.

Darrell & Vincenzo made it into the local paper.

Vincenzo is actually from Bergamo, but left after World War II to one of Britain’s African colonies, where he met his wife who’d moved down there about the same time from Florence. After making a family and life for himself there, he followed his sons to California when they went off to college, and he now makes his home in San Diego

Some Folks Are Getting Religious About Their Cycling....

Mike Wilson - Ultra Endurance Champion

Mike Wilson is a Cyclo-Vet with a very large ambition !  He has raced in the Race Across the West in 2010, a 860 mile non stop solo event in which he attained the King of the Mountains status and just finished the Heart of the South 500 in Alabama winning with a large margin while climbing approximately 35000 feet. His Crew Chief for the HOS 500 was Cyclo-Vet Member, Bobby Carter.

He is currently eyeing the Race Across America while holding down many full time postions and and training regimie that consumes just as many if not more hours.

Mike was quoted  - “I look at every ultra event as way to test myself, my limits and to grow as a person and an athlete."

Wilson has long been an endurance cyclist, twice before competitively racing the Furnace Creek 508, one of the most revered endurance cycling races in the world (racing the length of the Mojave Desert and Death Valley in one 48 hour period).

Mike is involved in sports marketing and public relations and is currently the Brand and Marketing Manager for Kali Protectives an award winning California-based sporting goods manufacturer of innovative body and head protection. Kali is a brand based on the lore of Kali, the Hindu goddess of chaos and destruction.

Want to Improve Your Cycling Endurance, Climbing Ability - Entering an Event that has you thinking - "How Can I Finish This ?"

We are fortunate to have a coach in our own midst with the Cyclo-Vets Race Preparation Coach, Rob Panzera from Cycling Camp San Diego.

Many Cyclo-Vets have gone to his local Base and Road Camps and have come out better performers utilizing his techniques and training skills.  Currently he is training the Race Preparation Group for Cyclo-Vets that have been lucky enough to been able to enter this program for the very first time.  Learning Race Basics, Nutrition and Tactics.

Some San Diego Cyclo-Vet Members are also interested in Ultra Endurance events such as Breathless Agony, Near Death Experience which encompass vast amounts of climbing and time on the bike.  Others are planning trips with the U.S. and abroad and also yearn for these skills.

It is not easy to get the training, and it can be quite expensive for the club member to get a coach and outline time for such an experience.

Rob has teamed up with Kirkwood to offer this experience for $549 for a choice a few multi day training events utilizing the terrain and his techniques, seminars, etc.

This premiere camp is to prepare riders for the Death Ride (<span>or any long distance, climbing ride you have planned this summer</span>).  Under the guidance professional coaching associates, campers will be provided the knowledge and professional instruction by Robert Panzera and his team to prepare them for an excellent experience at the Death Ride.
