(Coat photos) Cyclo-Vets earn 5 Omnium titles San Diego Cyclo-Vets Jacobo Melcer, Dick Wagner, Karen Boyd, Gary DeVoss and Gordy Shields won Omnium titles as the 2010 Omnium rolled to a finish with a day of heavy racing in the Criterium in Mira Mesa. Final official results have been posted at:
In addition to the five victories, the Cyclo-Vets earned a pair of hard-fought runner-up Omnium results. Suzanne Bowers finished second in the Crit to pull ahead of Charlotte Sussman of Trisports/Eclipse Racing and earn a silver medal in Women's 50-plus. Jane Faulkner of Team Ranchos won all three individual races in the division to earn the gold. And Phil Coats earned a silver medal in the Men's 50-plus category when he won the Crit title in the division. Perhaps the Cyclo-Vets most hotly contested Omnium championship came in the Men's 65-plus category where Gary DeVoss placed fourth in the Crit to edge Daniel Wulbert of Sun Coast Velo by six points for the title. The results capped three-days of racing and event organizing for the Cyclo-Vets. Omnium director Julie Hamilton, volunteer coodrinator DeVoss and club president Howard King thank each of the club members who volunteered their time so the event could be held. At Saturday's road race, cool conditions greeted the riders and Melcer won the Men's 70-plus title by more than three minutes in 1:10:20. He averaged 19:11 mph over the tough 22.4 East County course. Meanwhile, Jack Palmer won the Men's 75-plus division, edging fellow Cyclo-Vet Wagner, and Boyd won the Women's 65-plus division.
One of the day's dominant performances was turned in by SDBC's Herb Johnson, a climbing specialist who trains almost daily on Mt. Soledad in Pacific Beach/La Jolla. Johnson won by almost seven minutes in the Men's 65-plus division. In Women's 1-4 racing, Julie Cutts defeated Colavita/Outback teammate and Friday's Time Trial winner Coleen Knutson, and San Diego's Cindy Morgan won the Women's 55-plus title. On Friday, the Omnium pushed off with hot times in the Margaret Nolan Time Trial Challenge under cool conditions at the 8.2-mile Fiesta Island course. The Time Trial began promptly at 6:30 a.m. when 92-year-old Gordy Shields rolled out of the start house. The last time Shields had the opportunity to compete in the Omnium TT was in 2008. He finished a 20-kilometer course in 44:53.98, shattering by 13 minutes the national record for 90-year-olds for the distance. Following the race, Shields went for treatment of a back condition, and it was discovered he had set the record while racing on a broken hip. Two operations and two years later, Shields made it all the way back to race again. He broke 40 minutes for the 8.2 mile course, averaging a cool 12.31 mph. Another of the many notable performances turned in at the 2010 TT belonged to Coleen Knutson of Colavita/Outback Las Vegas. Knutson won the Women's 1-4 division with an average speed of 26.76 mph. For the men, Michael Williams of CA Pools / DeWalt needed only 17 minutes, 12.67 seconds to complete the course. Williams averaged 28.60 mph in winning Men's 35+. He was closely followed by Men's 45+ winner Scott Baker of UC Cyclery / JW Floors, who averaged 28.58 mph.
